Modern electronic devices have a lifespan, which is counted in a number of years. It is seldom that an electronic gadget has a usable lifetime of more than 5 years. For instance, cell phones have a stated lifetime of around 3 years, mainly because by that time you would need to replace the batteries or the display screen. Other accessories have an indefinite lifespan based on the wear and tear of regular use. The problem with these devices is that they are a hazard in the landfill and have to be disposed of in a different manner.

Materials recycling is the most eco-friendly way to dispose of electronic accessories. In this method, the device is disassembled with the aim of metal recovery. The method is expected to be more refined in the coming years, in order to recover rare-earth metals and minerals. Headphones are just one of the most prolific sources of recoverable rare-earth elements due to the magnet in the speakers.

The main idea of a metal recovery system is already in use by Daimler-Benz. The makers of Mercedes Benz recycle a large percentage of their cars and recover them as spare parts. These are mainly plastic parts that can be re-used by other cars of the same model. However, this method of materials recovery may not work with cell phones. For instance, cell phone batteries are not recyclable, or at least, not yet. When a battery loses its charging capacity, it is replaced outright.

Batteries are the most commonly replaced parts on electronics and electronics accessories. A case in point is that a battery can usually only be fully recharged for about 500 times. In actual lifespan, that means about 3 years of daily partial recharging. After that happens, the battery can no longer keep the full charge; instead, it goes lower than 70% of its original charge. Most people would notice this and have the battery replaced.

In terms of internal electronics, the metals used in electronics can be recycled. These include gold and copper. However, the cost of recovering these elements may be too high at the moment. Considering that gold is used as a very thin film on top of contact points for microchips, Otherwise, copper would be used instead. High-end headphones have jacks, which have copper contacts. Copper and gold are highly conductive materials, and in small electronic devices, the slightest edge can yield great performance gains.

Among modern electronic accessories, headphones have the biggest variances in materials used. High-end models use esoteric materials like molybdenum, as well as bamboo and wood. In recent years, the use of wood and bamboo has proven to give great acoustic properties for headphones. On the other hand, there is now a lot of circuitry involved in headphones and headsets. With the growth of active noise cancelling headphones, as well as the best headphones for the hearing impaired, today’s accessories can have their own microchip for digital to analogue conversion, as well as for programming for sound.

Some other accessories which can be hard to recycle include memory cards of all sorts, as well as USB memory sticks. The way USB flash drives are marketed today, these are now as small as they are, and as loaded with electronics as ever before. The first 1TB flash drive is expected by the end of 2017, and the first 2TB should come out shortly thereafter.

The same is true of SD and micro-SD cards, the first 1TB cards should be arriving at the market soon. Recycling these small accessories is not that easy. Most people would not give it a second thought, and throw it along with the non-recyclable trash.

Agencies are hard pressed in trying to find ways to recycle these devices. Materials recovery is not cost effective as yet. However, even as a centre, materials recovery is not about the present, nor the cost, but about the future and what it would mean to the next generations.

Still, the best way to dispose of electronic accessories is to lump them together with the computer, the cellphone, tablet and the laptop. Government agencies should be able to do something about this impending global problem. Indeed, some countries are already doing something about them. It is only a matter of time before the rest of the world catches up and try advanced materials recovery.

land-fill-1396596_640In the US alone, it is estimated that there are around 2 billion razors disposed. The sad thing is that they are designed in such a way that they can no longer be used again. As a result, they end up on landfills. Worse, they get carried away into the ocean. Some of them even reach the bellies of marine animals. We eat some of these animals. You can only imagine what happens if they reach your dining table.

The idea that we can’t do anything about these disposable razors is devastating. It is something that you need to use frequently. However, you can’t keep throwing one away. You know how much impact it would have to the environment. They are made of plastic and are usually non-biodegradable. They could hurt mother earth in more ways than you could ever imagine.

The best solution

Instead of dwelling on how much negative impact disposable razors can have to the environment, it is best if we just find a way to solve the problem. The first step is to make use of recyclable razors instead. You just have to change the blade and still be able to use the razor. They come in different sizes. The price also varies depending on the quality of the razor that you have bought. The good thing is that you can use the razor for a long time. There is no problem in throwing blades away. They may be recycled and they can also decompose.

You may also try out electric shavers. They will have the same effect when you shave but you can use them over a very long period of time. Once they fail to work, you just have to replace the broken parts and still be able to use them. The electric consumption is also very low. It is not a high-powered appliance that requires tons of energy. You can use it with very minimal energy. You also don’t have to worry about your electricity bills. If you don’t have one yet but you are interested to give it a try, you might want to read this electric shaver guide. This will help you find the best electric shaver option for your needs. You may find it a bit weird using the shaver at first. You also think that it doesn’t cut through. Over time though, you will get the hang of it and be comfortable in using it.

Act now

You might think that you have done enough to help the environment. You also try to be altruistic by donating to environmental causes. Though these actions are lauded, you also have to understand that you may do some things that you don’t know have impacted the environment in a negative way. Shaving using the disposable razor is just one of them. You don’t have to worry though since considering the alternatives, you can find a way to not be guilty about shaving soon.

is-electric-transport-the-answer-to-save-the-environmentThe transportation industry is making a shift from traditional vehicles to electronic transport. This is due to the government’s desire to reduce greenhouse emissions that affect climate change. For EU to reach its long-term climate goals, a drastic reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is necessary.

Electric transport is becoming popular for their claim to reduce the overall greenhouse gas emissions and therefore saving the environment. It also reduces exposure to tailpipe emissions. Electric vehicles have a genuine advantage in decreasing nitrogen oxide and particulate matter in highly urbanised areas. When taken at face value, it makes sense. But it is necessary to take a closer look at the workings of electronic transport and traditional vehicles to ascertain the real environmental effects of electric vehicles (EVs).

EVs vs. Traditional Vehicles

According to a recent study published in the Journal of Industrial Ecology, the comparative life-cycle analysis of EVs and traditional vehicles showed that under the European energy grid, EVs outperformed traditional vehicles in greenhouse gas footprint by about 10% to 20% for diesel and powered traditional vehicles, respectively, and with a 10% to 24% decline in global warming potential when assuming 150,000 km lifetimes. In a natural gas energy grid, EVs still outperformed traditional vehicles, but in coal energy grid, EVs increased greenhouse gas emission by 17% to 27% compared to gas and diesel powered vehicles, respectively.

The study also revealed that ongoing EV production methods remarkably increased human toxicity, freshwater eutrophication, freshwater eco-toxicity, and metal depletion impacts. These make the EV’s supply chain more environmentally damaging compared to the production of traditional vehicles. However, the increased environmental cost of EV production can usually be offset by the decreased greenhouse gas emission of EVs in the use-phase.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Electrical Scooters

In line with the above findings, let us examine the advantages of electric scooters for adults over conventional scooters and its effect on the environment.

In terms of performance, electric scooters perform comparably well against conventional scooters of the same weight and size. Road and Track even evaluated an electric scooter to be quicker and better than a conventional scooter. This can be attributed to the ability of electric machines to immediately develop full torque, especially without a clutch.

Electric scooters are low maintenance with only a battery, a motor, and a controller to keep you moving. You only have to worry about brake pads, tires, or a brake fluid flush. This makes it environmentally friendly by reducing usage of other maintenance fluids and parts.

Electric scooters have the advantage of big fuel cost savings. A 2,800 km (1,700 mi) of commuting on an electric scooter for 3 months only cost less than $30 for electricity, depending on electricity rates.

On the down side, electric scooters do not fare well in range because batteries cannot store as much energy as a gas tank, requiring multiple charges for long range driving or limiting oneself to fixed range driving.

So, are electric vehicles cleaner and greener?

The heavy use of fossil fuels means that electric transport is not as eco-friendly as it initially seems. However, while electric vehicles do produce global warming emissions, it’s not as much as conventional vehicles produce. An electric vehicle’s amount of emissions has a lot to do with the mix of energy sources powering the area’s electricity grid.

Electric vehicles must not be considered a cure-all for sustainable transport but instead a potentially helpful piece of the puzzle. The shift to electric transport must be accompanied by a keen focus on policy concerning life cycle management to eventually counter probable setbacks like water pollution and human toxicity. Electric transport is positioned to connect the personal transportation sector with the electricity, the metal, and the electronic sectors in a revolutionary way. Hence, these sectors’ developments must be collectively and steadily addressed so electric vehicles can contribute positively to climate change mitigation efforts.

Finding the right balance between the size of the battery and charging infrastructure is a critical factor in maximising the environment saving capacity of electric transport. As the technology develops, it is paramount to continue examining the environmental impact of electric transport for potential opportunities and pitfalls to be identified and to provide guidance to R&D and policy-makers.

got-a-new-mattress-dispose-of-the-old-one-in-an-environmentally-friendly-wayYou’ve suffered back pains. You’ve lost sleep and end up grumpy in the mornings. So you went ahead and read a ton of foam mattress reviews and decided to it’s time to replace your old, lumpy, sagging one. Now you are faced with a new dilemma. How will you dispose of the old one, in a way that will be environmentally friendly?

Millions of old mattresses end up in landfills every year. Though mattresses look ordinary, there are hazards associated with them that can be dangerous to the environment to landfill workers. The flame-retardant chemicals used on mattresses can seep down into the soil. Their size can create flammable air pockets, which can cause damage to landfill equipment. Mattresses are difficult to donate. They can double their weight in 10 years of use. Most charities do not accept mattresses, even those that have been cleaned by professionals. Recycling is also difficult because most recycling centres do not have the technology to disassemble mattresses.

There are still some things that you can do because some parts of mattresses can be recycled.

Recyclable parts

Many components make up a mattress. There are fabrics with buttons, stuffing, wood frame and steel springs. These items can be reused or recycled. You can sell the steel springs, and depending on the size, you can find about 300 to 600 steel coils in one mattress, and more if you have a high-quality one.

Foam and cotton make up the mattress stuffing. This could be used to stuff pillows, as carpet padding or in reupholstering furniture. The wood frame can be reused for carpentry work. It can also be disassembled and use for firewood or you can shred and use them as mulch for your lawn. Likewise, the fabrics can be cleaned and both the fabric and buttons can be reused.

If your carpenter friend or yourself cannot do this, there are some recycling facilities that accept bulky items. Their specially-designed machine will rip box spring mattresses to get the coil springs and separate the cotton and foam stuffing. Such facilities that are able to accept mattresses from the public for recycling might be difficult to find, though. Others might charge you a small fee.

Recycling facilities

You can search the website to locate a recycling facility near you. You can also check the site of International Sleep Products Association (ISPA). There are pilot programs in the UK although the UK Environment Agency advises people to contact the refuse department of their local council. Mattresses in commercial quantities are accepted by Matt UK for recycling.

Other options

You can try getting in touch with the manufacturer of your old mattress or the retailer who sold it to you and ask if they have a mattress recycling program. You can also ask if they have a facility they can recommend to take your old mattress away for recycling.

Think of the future, when you have to replace your current new mattress for another one. Buy one that is already eco-friendly. If possible, avoid a mattress with springs. Try to purchase one that use organic cotton, wool, hemp or bamboo, with natural latex cores and wood frames that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

Why Women Make Fantastic GardenersA successful gardener must have mastered several seemingly unrelated skills. Knowledge about the plants you are cultivating is crucial but so is an eye for placement, design, cohesiveness, and nurturing. Most women naturally have these skills embedded into their personalities. As the sex that can reproduce the instinct is part of being female. It is a desire to create and nurture that gives them an edge. Above all else, the desire and compulsion to nurture and grow are central to the personalities of women. Women love to cultivate plants and see them produce. There is nothing more satisfying for them than to see the plants thrive and prosper.

Another previously mentioned trait is the ability to think ahead about placement and design. To have a great looking garden that looks professional, you need to have the capacity to place different sized plant together to make a visual impact while not looking unnatural. This is more important in flower gardens than in vegetable gardens, but both need some planning and good placement.

Lastly, women have a knack for doing tons of research before embarking on anything. “Winging it” simply does not do it for them because they like to be prepared. In terms of gardening, they not only research on plants and other stuff, they also spend time in reading up on the equipment they will need to keep their lawns polished. It won’t be surprising for a woman to have “Husqvarna zero turn reviews” on their browsing history because it’s all part of the effort women put into their gardening projects.

While not all great gardeners are female, there is a vast majority that are, and it is a favorite hobby amongst the female populations. Gardening is also a relaxing past time that appeals to a woman’s creativity and naturally gives a feeling of accomplishment and relaxation. For those ladies that have not given gardening a try yet, they should give it a shot. It may be a favorite hobby. The great thing about gardening is being able to enjoy the things that you grow. If it is flowers then you can have beautiful flowers to add color and personality to your yard.
